Retail and POS terms, explained simply

Average basket
The mean value of a single transaction, used to gauge how much each customer spends per visit.
Chargeback
A reversal of a card payment initiated by the customer's bank, usually over a dispute.
EOD report
The end-of-day summary that totals sales, payments, and cash variance at close.
Modifier
An option added to a product at the till — extra shot, gift wrap, size — that adjusts price or details.
Reorder point
The stock level that triggers a purchase suggestion so a product never sells out.
Settlement
The transfer of captured card funds from the processor into your bank account.
SKU
Stock keeping unit — the unique code that identifies each product variant you sell.
Split tender
A single sale paid with more than one method, such as part card and part cash.
Tokenization
Replacing card data with a safe token so sensitive numbers never touch your devices.
Variant
A specific version of a product, such as a size or color, tracked with its own stock and price.
